What is bareboating?

Bareboating is just like it sounds, you are renting a bare boat. Some toys are extra and so are the related running expenses of the boat, as well as provisioning and potential cruising fees associated with your destination. The charter guest is responsible for all aspects of running the yacht, sailing, navigating, anchoring, provisioning, cooking, cleaning and having fun. The yacht rental process is similar to renting a car, where you provide a drivers license as a qualification, are provided with a vehicle full of gas, and have the option of purchasing security insurance.

This type of charter is for guests who want to captain the boat themselves and have the qualifications to do so.

Why should I choose Dream Yacht Charter for a Bareboat Charter?

Our Staff and Our Personalized Service

At Dream Yacht Charter North America, our aim is to make renting a bareboat monohull or catamaran yacht simple and pleasant whether you are new to bareboating or have chartered before. Between the organization of our website, the assistance of your charter booking consultant, and the commitment to personalized service at every level, from our base managers to our skippers and chefs, you will experience the Dream Yacht Difference.

You can start by browsing our bareboat fleets listed for each destination and/or fill out an Information Request form. A charter consultant will contact you with options and will be available to discuss your specific desires and find a charter yacht that's the right fit for you.  If you are unsure of the destination, browse the cruising areas at the top of any page of our website for some ideas and discuss the alternatives with your charter consultant.

Our Small, Intimate Bases

Dream Yacht Charter bases are carefully selected for their size and location. We keep our bases small and intimate, generally limited to no more than 20 yachts at one location. This enables us to provide more personalized service to our guests. Furthermore, unlike some of the larger competing charter operators, our base locations were chosen to be a little more removed from the main crowded cities or towns. This gives vacationers the option of spending a quiet first or last night on their boat while taking advantage of the marina’s amenities or they can choose to take a short taxi ride into the busy town to visit shopping areas and local eateries.

Our Quality Yachts and Equipment

In addition to smaller bases and a higher level of personal care, we offer only the highest quality yachts at Dream Yacht Charter. That is why we partner with the best ship yards in the world and take great care to choose yachts that offer you sailing performance as well as great comfort and space. In addition, all of our yachts in the Caribbean are brand-new or less than 4 years old.

We own and operate the one and only fleet of Catana catamarans in the world. The Catana 50 was named "Best Cruising Multihull" in Cruising World’s 2008 Boat of the Year contest. Known for high performance and design, Catana is also one of two large scale luxury yacht manufacturers in the world that produces catamarans with dagger boards. It is well known to serious catamaran sailors that Catana catamarans cost at least 30% more to purchase than other catamarans of a similar size. What they also know is that Catanas represent the gold standard for quality and performance in sailing catamarans.

Each of our yachts is specially outfitted and equipped by Dream Yacht Charter to answer the most demanding needs of our guests. More than 200 details have been changed in our Dream Yacht Charter yacht specifications to guarantee you a safe and carefree vacation. Our Catana fleet is additionally outfitted with higher-end equipment. See our equipment and options page for further information on our fleet of yachts and how they are outfitted.

Our Guarantee Includes Safety, Flexibility and Value

SAFETY

Our base manager is responsible for giving you an overview of your cruising area, inspecting the yacht for safety, and showing you all aspects of your yacht, above and below the waterline. Before you leave the base, you will become familiar with the following:

  • all the safety equipment including: fire extinguishers, lifejackets, and first aid kit(s).
  • cooking and refrigeration systems,
  • the heads and showers,
  • engine and regular check procedures,
  • the VHF radio system and proper mayday instructions,
  • all instruments, including the GPS,
  • all necessary charts and pilot books,
  • the halyards, winches, reefing lines and other rigging and controls,
  • the anchoring system(s),
  • dinghy and its engine; and,
  • all other systems particular to that vessel.

Our base manager and his staff want to make sure that you are comfortable with handling the boat. If you are not, they can arrange for the addition of a skipper (at a nominal fee) to assist you on a daily basis until you feel confident that you can manage the boat on your own.

All our yachts meet the highest safety requirements (see the boat specifications for more information) and are very well maintained and undergo regular technical checks. Should a technical failure happen despite our highly professional maintenance, we commit ourselves to repairing the failure within 4 hours following your call at the base during working hours (8 am to 5 pm). If you lose more than 4 hours (during working hours) we will refund you one full day. If the repair takes more than 1 day, we will provide you with a similar boat or refund you on a pro rata basis. In case of emergency you can rely on our hot line, at any time, 7 days a week.

FLEXIBILITY

We have many options to help you customize your vacation. Although we prefer careful planning in advance, we can be available at a moments notice to assist you. Do you need a last minute or short-term charter? Let us see what we can do. Do you need to book a shorter term charter? Do you have a special request for your yacht or are you celebrating a special occasion? Let us know. We will provide you with a list of options as well as see if we can help you out in any way. Do you want to sail one-way? No problem. If you decide you need a captain or a chef at the last minute, we can help you. Did you forget something on your provisioning list? Let us see if we can help you. Do you want security insurance to help you feel more at ease? We have that option. As we explained earlier, chartering is our business and we are constantly improving our process and striving to meet the desires of our guests. Our years of experience enable us to adapt to most situations.

How do I know if I am qualified?

At Dream Yacht Charter we prefer that the bareboat charter guest who will operate the boat has some previous experience on a boat of similar size and in some cases, at least one competent crew member.

If you are a first time bareboat charterer, we recommend that you submit your sailing resume and gain approval from the Dream Yacht Charter base prior to reserving your boat. Bareboat Sailing Certificates are useful but not mandatory.
Please download the Sailing Resume form and email or fax it to your booking agent for approval. We will work with you through the process.

Is bareboating for me?

If you have the experience, an adventurous spirit, and wish to try the real live-aboard lifestyle, then bareboat charter is for you. This type of charter provides the utmost in freedom and privacy. Do what you want when you want. Your agenda is your own.

If you are still unsure of your ability as a captain or simply want the knowledge of a local captain, you can charter a bareboat and hire a captain at a daily rate and then continue the rest of your charter on your own when you feel comfortable. If you would rather not cook, you have the option to hire a chef and have all of your meals prepared for you.

Are you a frequent bareboat charterer?

If so, that’s great! We appreciate our repeat and loyal customers and we will be sure to pass on the Repeater Discount. But, we also have other options for the frequent bareboat charterer that you may not have even considered.

Unlike other charter companies, our custom tailored ownership programs will allow you to buy almost any contemporary catamaran. Whatever boat on the market that you like, new or used, or any charter worthy monohull, it can be subsidized though guaranteed revenue chartering, performance revenue chartering, or buying it with a fractional partner (fractional ownership). Select one of our 26 worldwide bases to place your boat in and then enjoy the benefits of having your boat managed in charter.
